Wesleyan v. Bowdoin: In Game Notes

Start of 1st Quarter 

I wish you could see the numbers on the webcast. F. 

By the way, is this Katten with the play by play? Did he sing the Star Spangled Banner also? And is the Rocket on the video camera? He needs to work on following the ball. 

Wes force feeds the crease. Bowdoin 1-0. 

Thank goodness Borrero has filled in Congleton's shoes. He is a strong keeper. 

Wes EMO and we throw the ball away. Brutal. Why aren't they running a 2-4 like they did when I was there... Ha 

Failed clear and Follansbee finds Grayson Connors to score a goal. (8:13 in the 1st.) 1-1 

Bowdoin is struggling to clear the ball. 

Bowdoin's LSM Orr is doing a great job on Jasinski. Just picked up a big groundball. 

Bowdoin is very pateient on offense. Spreading the zone. Passing around the perimeter. Obviously, Spike intercepts the pass, just like Paul used to do all the time. 

Wes Turnover at the midfield, goal for Bowdoin. (4:35 in the 1st) (Bowdoin 2- West 1) 

Will be tough for Wes, Bowdoin has long possessions on O and winning the face offs. 

Kirk, Blumenthal and Latzman running mid for Wes - Follansbee wraps goal, great save by Bowdoin goalie. 

Katten is now getting short with whoever is in the box with him... 

Kirk shot - Another Connery save. 

Spike is all over the place. 

After 1st Quarter, Bowdoin 2 (Tracy with 2 goals) , Wesleyan 1 (Connors with 1 goal) 

Start of the 2nd 

Bowdoin scores another. Tracy again. Goulding & Wes wins the face off. Slash on Bowdoin. Wes needs to convert on this EMO. 

Benny needs to finish that one... Another failed clear for Bowdoin. Wes EMO turnover. Another failed clear for Bowdoin. 

Killeen takes a shot after a good possession. Connery save. 

Just in from Mr. Meade... Hartwick 2 Nazareth 1 

Wesleyan is trying to find answers on offense. They are getting possessions. Wes defense is forcing turnovers in 6 v 6. 

Bowdoin scores in transition. (9:19 in 2nd) A d mid just scored on Wes. 

Wesleyan comes back with a goal.

From MD UVA game, Quint just said Brattons shot was like a golf swing, the skip approach... Hey Quint unless you are Happy Gilmore, you don't skip while swinging a golf club.

Thank goodness Bowdoin is playing sloppy. They need to figure out their clearing game. Spike with another GB.

Bowdoin time out. Frantic pace. Not many fans on the sideline of this late March game.

Start of 3rd Quarter 

Ah yes, Hartwick 6, Nazareth 4 going into half time. 
#2 Gettysburg 7, #1 Salisbury 2 at half time. 

Traded opportunities on offense. Goalies make good saves. 

Another failed clear for Bowdoin. Jizz comes up with a good gb. Killeen turns it over. 

Flag on Wesleyan. Save by Borrero. Bowdoin is man up. Nate Green (shakedown) is playing well. 

Yes, Spike starts the transition - Wes scores - Wes 5, Bow 4 . Grayson from Follansbee at 10:55 in the 3rd. 

Bowdoin wins face off. 

Crease violation on Bowdoin. It would have been a nice Bowdoin goal. Goes the other way - Jason Benny hits the post! 

Adam Kirk find Grayson - He sticks it from the left side - Wes 6, Bowdoin 4. Uhh!!! (8:00 in the 3rd) 

Loose ball push by Wes on face - Ball goes the other way. 

More pixelating. Sweet. But I can see a 7 next to Wesleyan. 

What is going on... Wesleyan 9 Bowdoin 4 . Why couldn't we do this against Endicott and Nazareth? Nazareth lost to Utica. 

This isn't fun when the screen is purple and all I can see is the score. Wesleyan 10 Bowdoin 4 

I have audio now. New Bowdoin goalie at half. Brutal when you are the victim of a 6-0 run. 

Borrero makes a big save... We are back with visual. 

Is Kaufman playing d mid? Full time? I just heard Raba screaming his head off. He has already chewed 30 pieces of gum. 

McDonald just brought the heat with a body check. A flag? Really? Random: Hope Gettysburg can hold on. 

Borrero makes a nice save hugging the post. 

End of the 3rd. Outscore Bowdoin 6-0 in the quarter. Middlebury beats Colby, 13-7. 

Start of the 4th quarter. 

Grayson from Follansbee has his 4th. Wesleyan 11, Bowdoin 4. 

Borrero's stats are phenominal - Let the discussion begin, is it the goalie or the system? It is both... 

Wesleyan scores again. 12 - 4. Grayson Connors has 5 goals. He will pass Knacke's point total and Knacke will be furious. 

12-4 - Same score as the victory over Tufts. I wish I predicted this score. I thought it was going to be a) low scoring b) close 

Spike is so good. Another GB. 

Salisbury 10, Gettysburg 8 in the 4th. Can someone beat Salisbury? 

Latzman scores unassisted. 13-4. It is going to be a fun night in Middletown. 

#14 wins the face off for Bowdoin. 

Hartwick is down 8-7 in the 4th. 

Finally, Bowdoin scores its 5th goal of the game. 13-5 

The webast is not working, but I am pretty sure. Wes will pull it out.

BYU v. Colorado Collge, Friday, March 28th

LacrosseHub's Prediction: BYU 13, Colorado College 8 


On Friday night, BYU will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to face Colorado College. The Cougars are looking to bounce back after a tough loss against Minnesota-Duluth. In the most recent MCLA polls, BYU dropped to #6. Colorado College is 6-2 on the season after a disappointing 2007 campaign. 

Colorado College returned the majority of their starters from last year with the exception of their goalie. Their key wins have been an overtime victory against CSU and a blow out against then ranked Washington & Lee. Colorado College key losses have been to RPI and Mt. Ida. According to LaxPower they are currently ranked #79 in Division 3. Colorado College is averaging 10.7 goals per game on offense and letting up 9.6 goals against on defense. Their offense has been impressive in their victories but Coach Zazzaro is trying to find answers in the goal. 

Colorado College's offense has scored put up big numbers in their victories, but their offensive leaders need to be more consistent. Against Mt. Ida, midfielders Dugan and Combs combined for a 3/23 shooting performance. (This is even worse than my buddy, Mike Hines, career average of .204%) Both players will have to stick their shots. Their success creates opportunities for other Colorado College players. Although BYU's defense has had a tendency to give up lots of goals, their athletic defenseman and LSMs did a great job against Minnesota-Duluth. BYU's defense will have to be more physical around the crease than they were against Minnesota-Duluth. Also, BYU's goalie, Kikimoto is one of the best goalies that Colorado College will face. Look to Kikimoto to make 12+ saves in the game. 

BYU's offense will need to play at a higher level than they did against Minnesota-Duluth. If they can limit the turnovers and sloppiness around the net, BYU should be able to score 12+ goals. Their attack and midfield will have many opportunities off the dodge but they need to make smart decisions when they have space. In many instances, their offensive players should make the extra pass instead of forcing feeds to the crease. Colorado College will have an extremely hard time matching up against Grow, Heir, Manning and Austin. 

The x-factors in the game will be which team can control the face offs, Colorado College's goalie situation, and Colorado College's ability to convert EMOs. Both teams have been strong on face offs. In a high scoring game, the extra possessions can make or break a team. Colorado College's freshman goalies, Max Pluss and Scott MacArthur, have been splitting time in goal and their efforts have been erratic. They only combined for 7 saves against Washington & Lee and 5 saves against Mt. Ida. Pluss and MacArthur have to combine for more than a .500% save percentage for Colorado College to have a chance. In their two losses, Colorado College's EMO was 0-10. If they want to win on Friday night they will have to execute when they are a man up. 

PS- I have more career points than Mike Hines.

Over the last 6 months, my friend/teammate at Wesleyan University, Matt Wheeler and I have been working on launching an application that will connect high school student athletes with college coaches. The process has been exciting. We are looking forward to launching www.LacrosseRecruits.com in May.  In the meantime, we are driving from Salt Lake City back to New York in early April to meet with coaches and fellow laxers. If anyone has contacts who love the game of lacrosse and are active in the recruiting process, please let me know.
